Panting Deer is a singer-songwriter project shaped by reflection, longing, and the search for grace in the middle of ordinary life.

The name comes from the opening words of Psalm 42: “As a deer longs for flowing streams, so my soul longs for you, O God.” That picture of longing — of thirst, searching, and the sense that there must be something deeper still — sits at the heart of this project.

It speaks to spiritual hunger, certainly, but also to a wider human experience. We all long for things: peace in the midst of noise, clarity in moments of confusion, hope when circumstances suggest otherwise. The songs of Panting Deer are written from within that tension, somewhere between certainty and questions, between joy and sorrow, between where we are and where we hope to be.

There is something fitting about the deer itself. Alert. Attentive. Sensitive to its surroundings. Living with an awareness that there is always more happening beneath the surface.

That resonates deeply with how I experience life. In my day-to-day work, I have the privilege of walking alongside people through some of their most significant moments — celebrations and disappointments, beginnings and endings, laughter and grief. Sometimes those extremes can exist within the same afternoon. It is a privilege, but it can also be weighty. Hence the panting.

For me, songwriting has become a way of breathing out. Some people find that release through long walks, conversation, running, or silence. I find it in melodies, lyrics, and half-finished ideas that slowly become songs. Writing creates room to carry life well. It helps me pay attention.

Musically, Panting Deer is rooted in the singer-songwriter tradition, drawing from folk influences while remaining open to wherever a song needs to go. Some arrive quietly with little more than a guitar and a voice. Others ask for something fuller. The goal has never been to fit a particular mould, but simply to follow the song and tell the truth as honestly as possible.

There is no grand ambition behind this project. No career ladder to climb. Just songs written over time, shaped by life, faith, questions, conversations, and the people encountered along the way.

Panting Deer is a space for longing. A space for reflection. A space to breathe.
